DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE
June 2020 - In a world which is often brash and bombastic and where music very often reflects such a tone, Annie is a lovely and lilting haven of sonic loveliness. It builds gently from an understated, folk nugget into…well, an only slightly less understated slice of rootsy gold. It is spacious and reflective, full of rhythms which seem to punctuate rather than power, reserved guitar lines and emotive harmonicas trailing off into the distance.
Annie is a perfect example of using space in your music, never does it feel that there is anything more going on than is strictly necessary to make the song work. In fact it is those drifting spaces and havens of sonic emptiness which perforate the music which make it all the more powerful, a power derived not from musical weight but rather atmospherics and anticipation.
If you want to know the difference between impact and emotion, between music which is felt rather than that which is heard, if you haven’t yet worked out what the phrase less is more actually means, lesson one begins right here.
THE BANDCAMP DIARIES
June 2020 - Jeff Michaels Band is back on the scene with a new studio album titled “Better When I am Older.” This release features some soothing and nostalgic songs, including the opening track, Annie, which feels like a quintessential country rock song.
Fans of artists as diverse as Wilco and Calexico are certainly going to enjoy this release, while fans of legendary performers such as Townes Van Zandt or Steve Earle will definitely connect with this production as well.
With such a great combination of world-class musicianship and great lyrics, you really can’t go wrong. The mix is also very interesting, with a big, dry drum sound, an acoustic guitar on the left, and an electric on the right, making for a huge stereo image and a lot of depth. The unique solo riff features a glitchy, electronic-like sound that adds a one-of-a-kind touch to the mix. Check out “Annie” and learn more about the Jeff Michaels Band! The song is also featured on the group’s most recent studio album, “Better When I’m Older,” which is currently available on Spotify, and elsewhere on the web

June 2020 - Jeff Michaels Band breaks out with a stirring new release titled Annie, which is a track from the album Better When I’m Older. Based out of Boston, Massachusetts, singer, and songwriter Jeff Michaels is one of the most prolific musicians of our era that expresses a profound sense of loyalty to the working-class artist and the world of independent music. A few of his compositions have even found their way to television.
Annie is a unique song that beckons both a melodic and cerebral glimpse into the genius of Jeff Michaels’s sinister wittiness.
The song’s rich instrumentation is enchanting and reflects much of Michaels’s premise to use music as a vehicle to reach the hearts of his listeners. Annie’s pop-rock soundscape definitely boasts an inspiring amalgamation of piano measures and strums of acoustic guitar. This is one song that its listeners will revisit over and over again.
June 2020 - Sitting at a smooth 72bpm, the single [Annie] starts with a ten second instrumental introduction that is comprised of a gentle acoustic guitar and light piano. Jeff Michaels’ vocal color is relaxed and emotive, matching the melodic flow of the instrumentation.
June 2020 - Jeff Michaels Band delivers a slice of soulful Americana on the tender “Annie”... the way they let the thing suddenly come into bloom feels outright majestic.

“Jeff shows us all how a keyboard is supposed to be used. Among the tunes played that night is one about a woman he used to work with, which he admits might be a little creepy. Maybe, but it’s a damn good song.”

LIVE REVIEW, Johnny D’s, Somerville, MA ~ Nov, 2011
“During their set, they play three different songs about imaginary girls. We’ve all been there. The set’s got great energy, adding some jazz elements to the evening. Looking around the club, I’m seeing quite a few cameras flashing, and some folks moving to the music. Jeff rocks the keyboard with precision and style.”
